The Abortion Procedure

Abortion
Abortion is a process to removing pregnancy from the uterus. It bears considerable bodily, mental and spiritual effects.

The abortion procedures

The abortion procedure depends on the stage of pregnancy. There are basically two types of abortion procedures: Surgical and Medical abortion procedure. It is suggested to perform ultrasound to examine the feasibility of abortion procedure and know the right stage of pregnancy.

First Trimester

There is a choice between the two abortion procedures. The Medical abortion is also called as Mifepristone, Misoprostol, RU486 and is accessible upto nine weeks of gestation. After consuming the prescribed pill, within the duration of 24-72 hours, the uterus contracts and pushes out the tissue. This abortion procedure makes to sense natural and private.

Another abortion procedure by means of a manual aspiration device is identified as the IPAS Syringe. It is a quiet abortion procedure consisting of thin flexible tubing to make suction by a handheld syringe.

Suction Aspiration or Curettage is a surgical abortion procedure used between six to thirteen weeks of gestation to vacate the uterus. The cervix is injected to numb followed by insertion of a soft flexible tube through the cervix into the uterus. The suction is created by an aspiration machine remove the pregnancy from the uterus.

Second Trimester and Third Trimester

Surgical abortion procedure is used from this pregnancy stage onwards. Dilation and Curettage (D&C) abortion procedure is used to terminate pregnancy between 13 to 24 weeks gestation. Since the fetus is large, the cervix is widened by inserting numerous thin rods of seaweed before a day or two of abortion. When the cervix is stretched, the fetus is removed by using forceps. The fetus skull is trampled to make simple removal. To remove any other contents of the uterus or remaining tissue, a sharp tool called curette is used.

Dilation and Evacuation (D&E) abortion procedure is used from 15 weeks of gestation. It is also known as D & X or Partial Birth Abortion. This abortion procedure involves 2-3 days. The cervix is numbed with injections and dilators are introduced into the cervix. These dilators inflate making accessibility into the uterus. The dilators are removed on second day and cervix is numbed again. The pregnancy is removed and uterus is emptied with the use of special instruments. Finally, the aspirating machine sucks out any remains in the uterus. Complex pregnancies use further dilators on second day and fetus is removed on the third day.

Induction abortion procedure is an exceptional abortion procedure used to remove pregnancy performed after 21 weeks gestation. Salt water, urea, or potassium chloride is infused into the amniotic sac and prostaglandins are introduced into the vagina injecting pitocin intravenously.
